Hussey also played a role in a second run out as Jadeja found skipper George Bailey (3) well out of his ground at the bowler's end, and was himself next to go, caught and bowled by Jadeja for 24 off 29 balls.

Smart glovework by skipper M.S. Dhoni had Mitchell Marsh stumped for 13 off spinner Rahul Sharma and Wade was run out by a direct throw from Rohit Sharma in the 19th over.

The Australians collapsed losing their final three wickets in seven balls.

Clint McKay was caught by Dhoni off Vinay Kumar for a first-ball duck, veteran Brad Hogg was leg before wicket to Rahul Sharma for four and Xavier Doherty was run out by Suresh Raina attempting a suicidal second run to end Australia's innings with two balls left.

The 37-year-old, who scored his 13,000th test run with a swept single to deep square leg, brought up the hundred in 164 balls with his 11th four and doffed his helmet to accept a standing ovation from the crowd.

"I felt I played better today than I did in Sydney, it was probably a better wicket to bat on today, there wasn't much in it for any of the Indian bowlers," Ponting told reporters.

Clarke, who won the toss and elected to bat on a good batting track, shared a record partnership of 288 with Ponting in Sydney when he hit a brilliant 329 not out.

After the pair had again rescued Australia's innings from 84-3 to stand at 214 at tea, Clarke made a statement two balls into the final session by marching down the pitch to smash a huge six off part-time spinner Virender Sehwag.

The 30-year-old reached the century, his 19th in tests, with a less emphatic stroke and the ball trickled to the boundary at fourth man for his 14th four.

Sehwag had made a promising start as stand-in skipper for the banned Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the morning, keeping the Australians on the back foot and bucking convention by introducing recalled spinner Ravi Ashwin in the fourth over.

It was the pace bowling of Zaheer Khan at the other end, however, that forced the breakthrough when his inswinger trapped lefthander David Warner leg before for eight with just 26 runs showing on the picturesque ground's famous old scoreboard.

Shaun Marsh had made 14 in four innings in the series and his poor form continued when he misjudged the flight of an Ashwin delivery which went between bat and pad, took the bails off and sent him scurrying back to the pavilion for three.

Clarke batted through the day for his first test double century and the highest score by an Australian at the Sydney Cricket Ground, while Michael Hussey pitching in with 55 not out to give Australia a lead of 291 over India's first innings 191.

Ponting had departed just before tea for 134 to end the fourth-wicket partnership with Clarke at 288, a record for Australia in tests against India and a potentially match-winning effort from a pair who came together with the score on 37-3.

Needing victory to level the four-match series after a 122-run defeat in the opener in Melbourne last week, India's bowlers had been hoping for some early wickets but instead laboured all day in the heat.

Resuming the innings on 116-3, Clarke clipped a shot off his pads for three runs to bring up his fifty on the second ball of the morning and continued to play with composure as he moved towards his third century in his last six tests.

The 30-year-old reached his 18th test century, and the first of the series from either side, in the last over of the morning by slapping a Zaheer Khan delivery through the covers.

Ponting, who last scored a test century against Pakistan in Hobart in January 2010, matched his successor as captain almost run-for-run throughout the session but endured a nervous wait on 97 through the lunch break.

Sachin Tendulkar's incredible record at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) makes Mike Hussey nervous but the Australian batsman and his team mates will do everything to prolong the Indian great's agonising wait for his 100th international century.

Tendulkar, stranded on 99 centuries in one-days and tests since March last year, averages a mammoth 221-plus at SCG and underlined his form with a fluent 73 in Melbourne last week.

"I can assure you that everyone in our dressing room does not want him to make a 100," Hussey told reporters Sunday.

"I am a bit nervous because the stars seem to be aligning with Sachin needing one more 100. (It's) the 100th test match in Sydney, he's made runs here before.

"It's a little bit ominous but hopefully we can make him wait until after this series and he can get a 100 in the first game of the next series that he plays."

Tendulkar's team mate Rohit Sharma said the batting great was not putting himself under any pressure ahead of the second test of the four-match series starting Tuesday.

"I'm sure he's also not thinking of that. As we know, Sydney is his lucky ground so hopefully it happens here," said Sharma, whose other wish would be to make his test debut at SCG.

The last time the teams met at SCG was in 2008 when a row, involving Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh being accused of racially abusing Andrew Symonds, soured relations between the sides.

"That was a long time ago and the personalities and teams have changed quite a lot, particularly in our team," Hussey said.

Hussey predicted SCG to regain its spin-friendly reputation even though the ground favoured pace bowlers in the previous two New Year tests against Pakistan (2009) and England (2010).

"The last few years have been really seamer friendly and there have been overhead conditions to help that as well," he added.

"It looks definitely a lighter colour and generally that's the way it's gone over here, it has slowed down a little bit and helped the spinners as the game's gone on."

Hussey's words would be music to the ears of off-spinner Nathan Lyon, who would lose out to Australia's returning fast bowler Ryan Harris should the team opt for a four-pronged pace attack.

Lyon did not help his cause with a lacklustre display in Melbourne where despite the team's 122 run victory, he claimed his lone wicket when he removed India's number 11 batsman Umesh Yadav with the last ball of the match.

That sparked a calamitous collapse, with VVS Laxman departing 10 runs later for one and middle order batsman Virat Kohli out for a golden duck on the next ball to leave the tourists flailing at 69-5.

Laxman, so often Australia's tormentor but never threatening at the MCG, lasted 14 balls before he threw away his wicket by whipping a fuller delivery off his pads straight to Ed Cowan at short leg.

Kohli was trapped in front by Hilfenhaus and appeared incensed by the decision, but with the Indian cricket board vetoing the use of the replay technology before the series, had no recourse to appeal.

Siddle then ripped the heart out of India's innings, tempting Tendulkar with a fuller delivery and the talisman drove it straight to Hussey in the gully.

Set 292 for victory, a target not bettered at the Melbourne Cricket Ground since South Africa chased down 297 in 1953, India were disappointing in the morning before they eventually dismissed Australia for 240 runs in their second innings.

Hussey, who survived a dropped catch on 69 by Dravid on day three, rode his luck to beat a big caught behind appeal down the leg side but was soon out for 89, feathering a catch to Dhoni off a stinging Zaheer Khan delivery that moved away slightly.

Paceman Zaheer's joy was cut short when he blew a golden chance to end Australia's innings early by dropping Pattinson on 15 after lumbering in from fine leg to spill a low catch from a skied slog off Umesh Yadav's bowling.

The 21-year-old Pattinson, playing his third test, went on to blast an unbeaten 37 and build an invaluable partnership of 43 with Hilfenhaus.

Debutant Cowan earned selection on the strength of his 109 for a Chairman's XI against India this week along with three first-class centuries this season.

While the Australian team is in transition, India's top five batsmen -- Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman -- boast a combined tally of 610 Tests.

In the first of four Tests for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy it is India's experience against Australia's untried potential.

Wicketkeeper Haddin, who will be an important member of the Australian batting lineup at number seven, said it was time for the home team to stand up and meet the Indian challenge head on.

"You talk about our inexperienced top three, I think we've got a very in-form top three," Haddin told reporters on Sunday.

"And if we're going to do any good in this series it's going to be from one to seven with the bat. We've all got to perform.

"We've got to make sure we've got our game heads on and ready to go."

Coach Mickey Arthur arranged a batting camp this week and Haddin said the three-day get-together was to clear the batsmen's minds.

"Freeing your head, having no other thoughts in your head but just playing cricket," Haddin said.

"You'll see over the next five days whether it has all paid off."

Australia are also conceding huge amounts of big-match experience with the ball to India, with two of the four frontline bowlers, James Pattinson and offspinner Nathan Lyon, in their first year of Test cricket.

"We've picked an 11 that we think is confident to rip through this Indian side," Haddin said.

"They've got some great players and I know especially our bowlers are looking forward to having a crack at them."

Pattinson, just 21, has taken 14 wickets in his two Tests against New Zealand, while Lyon has 22 wickets from his seven Tests at 24.59.

Tendulkar, Dravid and Laxman have indicated they will go after Lyon to dent his confidence.

"We're just hoping that we score some runs off him, try to put pressure on him," India skipper MS Dhoni said.

"The kind of experience we have got, that will really help us in executing our plans."

Australian captain Michael Clarke said Lyon will have to be managed carefully during the series, but he regards him as a potential weapon against a team who are traditionally adept at playing spin bowling.

"We've got to make sure we bowl Nathan at the right times, set the right fields to give him a little bit of protection and then attack when it's time to attack," Clarke said.

Tendulkar could score his 100th century in Tests and one-day internationals during the four-Test series.

He has been anchored on 99 hundreds since March and Dhoni said Tendulkar was putting aside the speculation and pressure linked to his impending achievement.

"He's someone who keeps it really simple," Dhoni said. "He will get it at some point in time, whether it's this series or the next series.

"I don't think there's any added pressure on him.

Mohsin to remain Pakistan coach for England series

Mohsin Khan will continue as interim Pakistan coach for next month's Test and one-day series against England in the United Arab Emirates.

"There will be no change in the team management or national selection committee for the England series," Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Zaka Ashraf told a news conference in Lahore on Monday.

"We will look at hiring a fulltime coach after the series," Ashraf said.

Mohsin had been chief selector when the PCB appointed him as interim coach in September after the resignation of head coach, Waqar Younis for personal reasons.

The former test batsman has coached Pakistan to series wins over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh since taking charge.

Dav Whatmore, who has previously coached Sri Lanka and Bangladesh teams, was confirmed by the PCB as a leading candidate for the position of head coach.

Mushtaq has been working as a spin bowling consultant with England for last three years and was recently given a fresh two-year contract by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

He will join the England team in the United Arab Emirates on Jan. 4 as they prepare for a test and one-day series against Pakistan in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

"England has been preparing hard for this series and I have tried to convince them that they must learn to depend on spin if they want to win in the Asian region," Ahmed told Reuters.

"I see this series as a big challenge for the English and Pakistani spinners and there is going to be tough competition between Swann (Graeme) and (Saeed) Ajmal, who are the best off-spinners in the business today.

"It will depend on what sort of pitches are prepared for the series but I sense they will give assistance to the slow bowlers.

"But Swann and Ajmal are bowlers of a quality who can trouble anyone, even on even tracks. Swann has been brilliant for England in the last two years."

Ahmed, who played 52 tests and 144 one-day internationals, said he enjoyed working with the English cricket set-up as they had a very disciplined system.

"For me, coaching is a profession and my first job is to see in this series that the English spinners do well. Emotions become secondary when you are working as a professional," he said.

The two sides play three tests and a one-day and Twenty20 series, which is taking place outside of Pakistan due to security concerns.

Keeping it simple in seamer-friendly conditions again paid dividends for South Africa s Vernon Philander who continued his impressive impact in tests with another five-wicket haul on Thursday.

The 26-year-old rocked Sri Lanka with figures of five for 53 on the opening day of the first test -- his third five-wicket haul in his first three tests.

Philander took 14 wickets in two tests in his debut series against Australia last month and produced another impressive display as Sri Lanka were skittled for just 180 at Centurion.

"I just try to keep it as simple as possible. There was a bit of assistance there today and I tried to exploit it," Philander told a news conference.

"For me, I just tried to bowl as if it was a flat pitch. Sometimes you get on a greentop and you think you should bowl bouncer, bouncer, yorker and then bowl the middle stump out. But the assistance is there, why try to bowl any differently?"

Philander is not new to South Africa's national team, having played seven ODIs and seven Pro20 matches between 2007 and 2008, but he was considered ill-equipped mentally and physically for the rigours of international cricket and dropped.

Since then, Philander has taken 151 first-class wickets at an average of just 17.80 to suggest his omission was ill-judged.

He is also a hard-hitting lower-order batsman who has scored two first-class centuries and averages 27.13 with the bat.

South Africa trail Sri Lanka by just 90 runs after reaching 90 for the loss of just captain Graeme Smith at the close, but Philander believes the hosts still have work to do in order to take charge of the game.

"Tomorrow morning there'll still be something in the pitch and a lot depends on the overhead conditions. Obviously we hope the sun is out so it flattens the pitch. We still need to bat well and get through that initial patch," he said.

Stand-in-captain Virender Sehwag smashed 219 today, only the second double ton in all ODI cricket, to lift the team to its highest ever 418/5 against the West Indies in the fourth ODI against the West Indies at Indore.

Sehwag overhauled Sachin Tendulkar's world-record-breaking 200. He got there in 149 balls; the first 100 came in 69 balls. He smashed 25 fours and seven sixes to destroy the West Indies bowlers, who came to Indore on a high after registering their maiden tour victory in the 3rd ODI at Ahmedabad.

India's highest ever ODI total is the fourth best by any team ever.

The first batsman to make a double ton, Sachin Tendulkar, got his 200 against South Africa at Gwalior in February 2010. Tendulkar had scored 200 not out off 147 balls to take India to 401/3 in that game. Sachin was quick to congratulate Sehwag.

Sehwag was well supported by fellow opener Gautam Gambhir, who made a run-a-ball 67, as the two Delhi batsmen shared a 176-run stand for the opening wicket. Sehwag also had a crucial partnership with Suresh Raina, who was promoted up the order to No. 3. Raina scored 55 off 44 balls and put on 140 runs for the 2nd wicket with Sehwag.

Sehwag scored his half-century in just 41 balls as he slammed three fours and four sixes in his fiery knock, while Gambhir reached his fifty in 51 balls that included nine boundaries.

Gambhir and Sehwag brought up the Indian 100 in just 87 balls in the 15th over after Sehwag chose to bat in the fourth one-dayer against the West Indies.

India have replaced Umesh Yadav with debutant Rahul Sharma. The West Indies have brought in Kieran Powell in place of the injured Darren Bravo.

Sehwag knows well that his team needs to deliver the knockout punch in this game rather than leave the fate of the five-match series to the final game in Chennai.

Having run India close in the three games, the West Indies may well fancy their chances of keeping the series alive till the final match, despite the absence of Darren Bravo due to hamstring injury he suffered at Ahmedabad.

Indian pacer Vinay Kumar dismissed West Indies opener cheaply after skipper Virender Sehwag won the toss and elected to field against the visitors in the 3rd ODI at Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad on Monday.

Sehwag said that dew factor will pose difficulties before spinners to grip the ball in the second innings.

Having won the first two ODIs, India are the favourites to win the third match at Motera and thereby clinch the five-match series. However, it is not an easy task for the home team, who will be hoping that West Indies do not spring any surprises like they did during the first couple of matches.

Ground facts: India have played a total of 13 ODIs at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad and have won only six times here. But the hosts will not be thinking about that and instead will be wanting to reflect on the November 2002 match they played against West Indies here when they chased down a mammoth target of 325 with 14 deliveries to spare. The Indians will also be basking in happy memories of Motera after their quarter final win against the Aussies in the 2011 World Cup at this ground. Meanwhile, the Caribbean team too will be eager to play at Motera because they have lost only once against India at this ground while registering three wins against them here.

India: While it is a fact that India are 2-0 up in the series, the scoreline is lot closer than what it suggests. India, despite having won both the matches, did not quite cruise to victories. In the opening match, they were left nine down for 201 while chasing a relatively easy target of 212 and it required the tail-enders Varun Aaron and Umesh Yadav to score the remaining 11 runs. In the second match, India, having asked West Indies to bat first, had reduced them to 170/9 before Ravi Rampaul's heroics helped the Caribbean side to 269/9. India did manage to chase the total down with five wickets and 11 deliveries to spare, but not without early and late jitters.

One thing similar with the first two ODIs is the batting performance of the Indian team. The top order, consisting of Virender Sehwag, Parthiv Patel and Gautam Gambhir, failed to come up with a decent showing with the bat on both occasions and it required the efforts of Rohit Sharma to help the team through. The Mumbai batsman had Ravindra Jadeja's help in the opening match to get India closer to the target and then aided Virat Kohli in the second ODI to make it 2-0 for India. India will be pleased with the form of Rohit Sharma who has back-to-back half-centuries under his belt, and Virat Kohli, fresh from registering his 8th ODI ton. However, the home team will be concerned with the form of the top three, especially that of Sehwag and Gambhir. With the Australia tour fast approaching, Indian coach Duncan Fletcher will be hoping that the duo get back to their run-scoring ways sooner than later as the team will be banking on them for good starts during the trip Down Under. The other concern is Suresh Raina, who has also failed twice in this series. While his form will not have much of a bearing on the India-Australia Tests, it is imperative that he stays in good touch as he will have a vital role to play in the ODI tri-series that follows the four Tests.

As far as India's bowling is concerned, it has not been much of a worry as the likes of Vinay Kumar, Varun Aaron and Umesh Yadav have been doing decent jobs as have the spinners R Ashwin and Jadeja. But their one worry will be that they could not contain a belligerent Rampaul in the second ODI which again points out to India's inability to complete a rout. Over the years, Indian bowlers on many occasions have reduced sides to five-down or six-down without much of a total on board. However, their failure to run through the oppositions has meant that teams have been able to spring back and post competitive totals. Speaking of the current series, R Ashwin's expensive outing in the 2nd ODI may not be a big cause of concern. However, the team will be hoping that he does not give away too many runs in the upcoming matches as he is the main spinner for the side and a dent in confidence can affect his future performances.

West Indies: Although they are no longer a cricket team which is feared by the rest of the world, West Indies have shown time and again that they are not a side to be taken lightly. They have reiterated this fact with their spirited performances in the Indian tour, despite not tasting any success. Having said that, West Indies are also to be blamed for the losses as they lacked the killer instinct and failed to go for the throat and close it out in spite of getting multiple opportunities to do so. In the opening ODI, they had reduced India to 59/5 before letting the opposition back in the game due to lack of proper game thinking - Inappropriate field placing, not using the right bowlers and failing to read the situation properly meant that India ended up winning the first match which belonged to West Indies for most part. Even in the second game, they had removed the top three early but could not continue pegging away at the Indians.

The West Indian top order has failed to deliver in the two ODIs so far and this will be a big concern for the team management. Barring Lendl Simmons and Darren Bravo, the rest of the Caribbean batters have not had a good run in the series. In Adrian Barath, Marlon Samuels, Danza Hyatt and Kieron Pollard, West Indies have a powerful batting order but lack of runs from these players has affected the side a lot. West Indies had Ravi Rampaul to thank for his robust 86 that helped the team post a competitive total in the second match. However, his role is that of a bowling spearhead and as a bowler, he will be disappointed with the performance of his batting colleagues. Another cause for concern is the role of Darren Sammy. He is a decent bowler, capable of producing regular breakthroughs, but as an allrounder, his ability to bat is also crucial for the team and the skipper has let the team down in that role. He has failed twice in this series and his batting position is also a worry. With a talented all-rounder like Andre Russell coming way down the order, West Indies might think of letting Sammy bat below Russell in the interests of the team.

The West Indian bowlers have been doing fairly well with the ball although their lack of penetrativeness and their inability to act according to situations remains a concern. No doubt that there is quality in the bowling department with the likes of Rampaul and Kemar Roach leading the pace attack while Russell, Sammy have also been good with the ball. West Indies though need to rethink their spin attack. While Marlon Samuels has kept things tight from one end, he needs one more spinner who can make use of the situation to the team's advantage. In the opening game, Samuels did have Anthony Martin for support, but the latter did not play a major role. West Indies decided to go only with Samuels in the second match, opting for a more seam-laden attack. But that was not the right way to go about it as there were three similar medium pacers in Sammy, Russell and Pollard apart from Rampaul and Roach, which meant that there was hardly any variety in the bowling attack. West Indies need to include an extra spinner in the remaining games who can be create an impact and a young Sunil Narine would perfectly fit the bill. He needs to be included in the eleven even if it means that a quality allrounder, be it a Pollard or Russell, is left out.

Final word: Despite some hiccups, India have been on top West Indies in this series. Unless West Indies do something out of the ordinary or India cave in miserably, it is likely to be a series-clinching result in favour of the home team at Motera.

BRISBANE: A James Pattinson-inspired Australia won the first trans-Tasman Test at the Gabba on Sunday by nine wickets within four days.

They required 19 second innings runs to win after a stunning burst by Test debutant Pattinson (5-27) helped the hosts rout New Zealand for 150 in their second innings on Sunday.

Australia (1-19) lost opener Phil Hughes (seven) - who was dropped the previous ball - before David Warner (12 not out) hit the winning boundary.

The 21-year-old Victorian boasted figures of 5-7 by his seventh over - his first five-wicket haul in just his 10th first-class game.

New Zealand began the day at 1-10 but went to lunch at 7-121.

And they were 8-123 when the stubborn Dean Brownlie (42) was dismissed by Peter Siddle (1-44) on the eighth ball after lunch.

Off-spinner Nathan Lyon (3-19) helped clean up the tail.

It marked a big turnaround for Pattinson who was 0-13 after his first Test over on Thursday, finishing with first innings figures of 1-64 off 15 overs.

But not everything he touched turned to gold on Sunday.

He dropped Perth-born Brownlie on 34, denying Warner a wicket with his first ball in Test cricket.

New Zealand took seven off the first over of the day before all hell broke loose.

Martin Guptill (12) was snapped up at bat-pad and two balls later Kane Williamson (0) was caught behind driving - as was captain Ross Taylor (0) next ball.

Jesse Ryder survived the hat-trick ball, jamming out a nasty yorker but New Zealand soon slumped to 5-28 in the 13th over.

Nightwatchman Doug Bracewell would not have fancied his odds of surviving considering his rotten luck in Brisbane - he had three chances go down off his bowling in Australia's 427 first dig after dismissing Michael Clarke (139) on a no ball. Sure enough he was next to go - giving Pattinson five scalps. The aggressive Ryder (36 off 38) showed some resistance before being caught slogging.

Pattinson was named man of the match for his efforts in the second dig.

Pakistan beat Bangladesh lead series 2 0: Pakistan have defeated Bangladesh by 76 runs in the second one-day international match at Shere Bangla national stadium Mirpur on Saturday.

Pakistan is leading the three-match series by 2-0.

Umer Gul bowled superbly and grabbed four wickets while Mohammad Hafeez and Saeed Ajmal picked up two and one wickets respectively.

From Bangladesh Nasir Hossain made 100 runs while Shakib Al Hasan 34 runs.
Earlier, Pakistani skipper Misbah-ul-Haq won the toss and set 263 runs target for host Bangladesh to win the match.

Middle order batsman Umar Akmal scored highest 59 runs while boom boom Shahid Afridi made 42 runs. Younus khan and Misbah scored 37 runs each while Mohammad Hafeez made 32 runs.

Nasir Hossain of Bangladesh was declared man of the match.

The final one-dayer will be played in Chittagong on Tuesday before the rivals face-off in two Test matches.

Australia ride early blows after Kiwi collapse

Ricky Ponting and Usman Khawaja combined for an unbeaten stand of 66 to usher Australia to 91-2 at tea on the second day of the first day test against New Zealand after the early loss of both openers on Friday.

Daniel Vettori had earlier thrown away his wicket just four runs short of a century to trigger a New Zealand collapse from 254-5 to 295 all out just before lunch at the end of an extended morning session.

Debutant David Warner, however, lasted for just seven balls of the Australian innings before he was despatched for three, while his opening partner Phil Hughes made 10 before he departed to leave the hosts wobbling at 25-2.

Ponting, looking to end a 21-month wait for his 40th test century, showed only flashes of his once brilliant shot-making as he inched his way to 34, while Khawaja headed into the break on 38 and looking in good shape to reach a second test 50.

New Zealand had resumed in the morning on 176-5 with Vettori and Dean Brownlie assiduously extending their sixth-wicket partnership to 158 before the former captain's rush of blood to the head saw him run out.

Vettori, who had taken just four balls of the morning to bring up his 23rd test half century, had smacked a neat four to move onto 96 when he drove a Nathan Lyon delivery to mid-off and set off optimistically for a run.

Michael Hussey gathered the ball and the accuracy of his throw made Vettori's despairing dive academic and sent the 32-year-old trudging back to the pavilion.

Reece Young lasted less than an over before departing for two and Doug Bracewell soon followed for an 18-ball duck with Tim Southee (17) and Chris Martin (one) also failing to keep company with Brownlie, who finished with an impressive 77 not out in just his second test.

Lyon, playing his first match at a ground which traditionally offers little for spinners, took three of the last four wickets to finish with a figures of 4-69.

Australia had two overs to negotiate before lunch and Warner hit a crisp three off Vettori for his first test runs in the first.

Southee, however, brought an early end to his outing with a his first ball, a short delivery that caught the 25-year-old on the gloves and left wicketkeeper Young with an easy catch.

Hughes fell victim to peach of a delivery from Martin and a superb low, diving catch from Martin Guptill at gully but the quality of the delivery will not reduce the pressure on the Australian opener after another failure.

Confidence is a great thing but the skipper knows that it will take more than mere confidence to stop the Indians at a venue where they are yet to lose a game.

India, meanwhile, have to guard against the kind of batting failure which nearly cost them the Cuttack game. Skipper Virender Sehwag is hoping the dismal performance of the top order is just a blip on the radar, and that his men will make best use of a traditionally batting-friendly strip.

West Indies will also remember - as will India - that the Test match immediately preceding the ODIs was thrillingly close. Given that, both teams will go into the second ODI neither feeling over-confident about having a large advantage over the other and neither low on confidence. Also given that both previous close results were arrived at after many batsmen on either side played loose shots, this match could well come down to who makes fewer errors.

India: The Indians are not likely to change the combination that won them the first ODI. The track at the ACA Stadium is expected to heavily favour batsmen, with the director of operations at the ground - former India keeper MSK Prasad - saying that there would be little help for slower bowlers and the seamers would have to step up for both teams. In such a scenario, India will stick to the pace trio of Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron and Vinay Kumar. The batting selects itself, with none of Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag or Gautam Gambhir droppable, and Ravindra Jadeja providing the all-round option.

The only change Sehwag could mull over is one of tactics. Both Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron consistently hit speeds of above 140 kmph in the first ODI, and throwing the new ball to both of them instead of to Umesh and Vinay Kumar might be a gamble worth taking. Aaron has not had the new ball in both ODIs he has played so far, but it's still a gamble worth taking.

West Indies: They will feel good about how they have managed to compete with an on-paper superior Indian team, but they will also be a little hurt at the fact that they couldn't quite finish the job off. Darren Sammy will be justified in demanding more from his batsmen, many of whom perished to bad shots. The only shining exception was Darren Bravo, who enhanced the reputation he had built for himself in the Test series with another fine knock in the first ODI. Each of the other batsmen in the top 7 got to double figures but none could make it count - which is something West Indies will have to correct. The bowlers made them competitive in the first match, but if the batsmen had done their job, the bowlers would have not merely made them compete, but would have won them the match.

The only bowler who didn't quite make an impact was spinner Anthony Martin - but then he did castle Man-of-the-Match Rohit Sharma, so he could yet save his spot in the eleven. If he doesn't though, West Indies have the exciting Sunil Narine in their ranks to take up the spinning duties.

With a 1-0 lead under their belt, one would have thought that the Indians will be favourites to defeat West Indies – especially after they had had the better of their opposition in the Test series by a 2-0 margin. However, the manner in which the first ODI went, could just be the sign of things to come – the games should be tough and India will need to fight hard to come home winners.

The Cuttack track was expected to be a belter according to the curator but when the Indians struggled to chase down 212 they needed for a win, it looked like the sign of things to come. The change of the Powerplay rule and the bringing in of the two new balls has generally reduced the scores in the 50 overs and one can expect it to be another 225-250-run pitch at Vizag.

India should go into the match with the same batting line-up – after all, they did win the game in the end. However, time will be running out on Parthiv Patel at the top of the innings. While his keeping still allows him to back MS Dhoni in the side, it is his batting that could be an issue. Misbah made a double bowling change, bringing on the legspinner Afridi and the offspinner Malik. Afridi then struck twice. In his second over, the 13th of the innings, Afridi used the extra bounce to have Nafees caught at point while trying to cut off the back foot. Shakib Al Hasan and Nasir Hossain began to repair the substantial damage but they had miles to go to get the job done. They didn't. Yuvraj Singh vows to return after lung tumour diagnosis

Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh has told cricket fans it is simply a matter of time before he is back playing again after being diagnosed with a non-malignant lung tumour.

A wave of sympathy swept the country when his mother said in a statement at the weekend that the left-hander, who turns 30 next month, had a golf ball-sized tumour.

Yuvraj played in the Delhi and Kolkata tests against West Indies this month but will be missing for the five-match one-day series against the same opponents that starts in Cuttack on Tuesday.

"Overwhelmed with your love and support. I am absolutely fine, just need to get match fitness and training, will be back soon," he said on his Twitter account.

"Need some more time to regain 100p (percent) fitness. Nothing serious, need to build up the lost stamina."

One of the cleanest strikers of a cricket ball, middle-order batsman Yuvraj is not a regular member of India's test side but is an automatic choice in their limited-over teams.

Yuvraj was instrumental in India's 2007 World Twenty20 victory in South Africa and hit England fast bowler Stuart Broad for six sixes in an over in one of the matches.

He was also named player of the tournament in India's successful 50-over World Cup campaign on home soil in February, March and April.

The statement from his mother Shabnam Singh said Yuvraj suffered regular bouts of coughing and vomiting during this year's World Cup but ignored them.

As the problem persisted he finally sought medical advice.

"Scans showed Yuvraj was dealing with something really serious. A golf-ball sized lump (was) found over his left lung and doctors advised us to go in for more detailed scans," his mother said.

"Everyone who knows Yuvraj knows he is a fighter and has been very strong and a pillar for the family through this trying period. We are sure that very soon he will be back on the cricket field in India colours."

Paceman Junaid Khan out of Pakistan’s Bangladesh tour

Pakistan paceman Junaid Khan was ruled out of the team’s tour of Bangladesh after injuring his abdominal muscle during the fifth and final one-day against Sri Lanka here on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old left-arm paceman had a MRI scan after he felt pain during his three-over spell in the match, which revealed a partial tear.

“The scan revealed a partial tear of the abdominal muscle which requires six weeks of rest,” said assistant team manager Naushad Ali. “He is out of the Bangladesh tour and needs rehabilitation.” Khan’s injury is the second blow to Pakistan after allrounder Abdul Razzaq was Tuesday ruled out of the tour with a shoulder injury.

Pakistan have already announced a 16-man squad for the tour of Bangladesh where they play one Twenty20 match, three one-day internationals and two Tests, starting with the Twenty20 in Dhaka on Tuesday.

Ali said Pakistan Cricket Board’s selection committee would in time name replacements for the injured duo.

Khan, who made his Test debut on the tour of Zimbabwe in September this year, has so far played four Tests, nine one-day internationals and two Twenty20s.

Sri Lanka Sports minister asks cricket team to shape up

Sri Lanka’s sports minister has told the nation’s cricket team to start talking to each other to help end their losing streak, saying a lack of communication was the main problem in the squad.

Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage met the players, selectors and administrators on Tuesday to find a solution ahead of next month’s Test and one-day tour of South Africa.

“It was revealed that the main reason why the national cricket team had failed to perform was due to miscommunication between the team, the selectors and the coaches,” the ministry said in a statement.

“It was discussed in detail the importance and the necessity for captain Tillakaratne Dilshan to maintain sound communications with the selection committee and coach (Geoff Marsh).”

The players were allowed to “openly and freely” discuss matters with the minister, the statement added.

Interim committees appointed by the government have run cricket in Sri Lanka for the last seven years, prompting accusations that politicians were interfering in the sport.

Aluthgamage two weeks ago dissolved Sri Lanka Cricket’s interim managing committee to clear the way for the national board committee to be elected for the first time in seven years in line with International Cricket Council rules.

Sri Lanka have failed to win Test and one-day series in their last three encounters in England, at home against Australia and in the United Arab Emirates against Pakistan.

Their worst performance came against Pakistan earlier this month when they lost the Test series 1-0 and the one-dayers 4-1, before being thrashed by five wickets in the lone Twenty20 international.

Local media has speculated about tensions in the team after Sri Lanka lost the World Cup final to India in April that led to the resignations of skipper Kumar Sangakkara and his deputy Mahela Jayawardene.

Marsh, a former Australian opening batsman, took over as coach ahead of the Pakistan series.

Sri Lanka open the six-week tour of South Africa with a practice match in Benoni from December 9 to 11.

The back-to-back Tests will be played at Centurion (December 15-19), Durban (December 26-30) and Cape Town (January 3-7), before the rivals face-off in a five-match one-day series.

Wasim Akram Advocates one coach for Pakistan

KARACHI: Former Pakistan paceman Wasim Akram on Tuesday urged the nation's cricket authorities to appoint a single head coach rather than three separate ones for bowling, batting and fielding.

Pakistan have been on hunt for a national team coach since Waqar Younis quit the post in September this year citing health problems.

Former opening batsman Mohsin Khan has since led the team on an interim basis and has shown a willingness to continue.

But the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has formed a three-man committee to find a replacement for Younis, suggesting a foreigner would be better suited to the hot-seat.

New PCB chief Zaka Ashraf has stressed the need for separate batting, fielding and bowling coaches in addition to a head coach, but Wasim cautioned against complicating team affairs.

"I think the idea of separate coaches doesn't suit Pakistan," Wasim told AFP.

"Pakistan need one head coach who should guide the team in case the of too many coaches things will get complicated."

The PCB committee had shortlisted five candidates for the post but progress has been delayed after Ashraf said he wanted separate coaches for each department.

Australia VS New Zealand 1st Test at Brisbane: Paceman Mitchell Johnson is likely to be sidelined for up to five months with a foot injury, Cricket Australia said on Wednesday, almost certainly ruling him out of upcoming test series against New Zealand and India.

The 30-year-old, who has taken 190 wickets in 47 tests, injured his left foot in the recent test victory against South Africa and subsequent scans revealed a piece of metal embedded under his big toe.

"Mitchell will travel to Melbourne this week to be reviewed by specialist doctors and will most likely need surgery, which is expected to keep him out of cricket for four to five months," team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said in a news release.

"The programme for his recovery will be assessed following any surgery."

Johnson, ICC Player of the Year in 2009, has endured a disappointing 12 months with the ball since being unceremoniously dropped for the second Ashes test against England last year.

He returned with a nine-wicket haul in the third Ashes test in Perth but has rarely threatened to reach such heights since, taking just three wickets at the cost of 255 runs in the two recent tests in South Africa.

The leftarmer was one of five players unavailable through injury for the first of two tests against New Zealand, which starts on Thursday at the Gabba in Brisbane.

Australia, who play India in a four-test series starting in late December, have included four uncapped players in their squad for the Gabba match, including three pace bowlers.
